The fall edition of ChoreoProject will take place 2:30 and 7 p.m. Nov. 22 at San Jose State University, where sjDANCEco is in residency. There will be an open forum Q&A after the 2:30 performance only. Normally the venue would be the school’s Dance Theatre, but that is undergoing a renovation. The shows instead will take place at the Concert Hall in the Music Building. The nine works on the program represent “a lot of variety–beautiful duets, strong ballet pieces,” according to Basile. “I’m delighted to have such a strong presence of modern dance. There was really stiff competition to get into this program,” she adds, alluding to the audition process. The choreographers hail from various parts of the Bay Area, as well as Nevada and even New York.

The Empire State representative is Alison Cook Beatty, a faculty member at Joffrey Ballet School and a returnee from the 2013 fall ChoreoProject, This time her piece will be “Patience/Impatience,” which was inspired by a poem she wrote, as well as by original music composed by Avner Finberg, Cook Beatty’s dancers will be tangling, metaphorically speaking, with weights and ropes that suggest either a game of cat’s ballet practice like a champ ballerina gift - kids t-shirt cradle or a spider web, Frustrated womanhood is the subtext..

Expect similar innovation and fresh perspectives from the rest of the participating choreographers. They are, in alphabetical order: Leah Bueno, Natasha Carlitz, Peter Cheng, César R. Degollado, Wei-Shan Lai, Vishal Ramani, Sandra Sheuber and Martha Zepeda. Bueno, Zepeda and Cook Beatty are award recipients from previous ChoreoProjects. The honors are given for audience favorite and artistic directors’ choice. “ChoreoProject has gone national in a sense,” says Julia Booker, administrative director for sjDANCEco, which was founded by Gary Masters, who has long been associated with the prestigious Limon Dance Company.
