Adapted by Joe Landry into an old-fashioned radio play, “It’s a Wonderful Life” re-creates the small town of Bedford Falls, N.Y. using the creativity of director Samantha Fryer and her talented cast. Based on Frank Capra’s 1946 movie starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed, the radio play follows the story of the angel Clarence, who hopes to finally receive his wings by saving the life of George Bailey. The resident of Bedford Falls has spent his life trying to help his neighbors but now thinks the only way to really help them and his family is to take his own life — and on Christmas Eve, of all times.

Scenic designer Martin Flynn creates the 1950s radio station complete with “Applause” signs that light up at appropriate times, Costume designer Marianna Ford has outdone herself with the fashions, especially the outfit toddler baby ballet belly toddle up to the barre shoes slippers tutu dress slippers flower crown angel wing jersey short sleeve worn by George’s wife Mary, who also sports period-perfect waves in her hair, James Frankle creates the various sound effects with his buckets of water, shoes, bells and more, The various actors are introduced by Alan Coyne, who plays Freddie the show’s MC, One of the fun things about this version of the popular film and stage play is that Town Hall actors are playing actors playing a character in the radio play, When not in front of the microphone, you see them relaxing about the set interacting with one another..

All of the parts, except for George (a wonderfully energized Dan Saski) and Mary (beautifully portrayed by Jenna Stich), are double- and triple-cast. Part of the fun is watching the actors shift from one character to another, especially when the same actor plays two characters talking to each other! The actors creating this bit of insanity are Adrian Altaffer, John Blytt, Jacqui Herrera, Carly Hoskins, Jerry Motta and Briel Pomerantz. Fryer directs with a sure hand, keeping the pacing fast and adding some nice casting bits such as Herrera portraying a man at one point (great deep voice) and 14-year-old Altaffer playing a bank examiner. In addition to the various roles in the radio drama, the cast also performs some very funny 1950s commercials for the audience’s pleasure.
