The conference, whose theme was “Achieving Environmental Sustainability,” was modeled closely on U.N. protocol — the students even wore formal business attire — and addressed adult problems that the United Nations is currently debating, such as children’s rights and climate change. Five hundred students from 13 countries attended the Nov. 15-18 conference, which was subsidized by the Henan Ministry of Education — making it affordable for foreign students. “It was very cool,” said 11-year-old Dadian, whose school took on the role of U.N. representatives from Costa Rica and Thailand — countries they are studying in class. “We talked about problems that are worldwide and about finding solutions to those problems. I really understand how lucky we are to have shelter and not have to worry if we have a meal at night.”.

Dadian worked with the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee, which focused on children’s rights and childhood labor, “We came up with lots of ideas about how to raise money and help children, such as marathons and bake sales,” she said, “We would send the money to the government to give to families that don’t have enough food and water.”, Her fifth-grade classmate, Drew Collins, 10, along with fellow student Chase Howard, made a presentation to the Economic and Finance Committee on the topic of microfinance from the perspective of the people in Thailand, It read in part: “Microfinance scarlet ruby ballet flats is a kind of bank that offers financial services specifically for the poor, The U.N, thinks of it as a key to fighting poverty.”..

Collins said the conference taught him a lot about poverty. “Before the conference and my research, poverty seemed like a very far-off thing,” he said. “After the conference I realized that 1.2 billion people live in extreme poverty.”. Collins found China very different from the United States. “People even walk differently. The conference was not what I had imagined, but it was cool,” said Collins, who already has his sights set on attending next year’s event in Chile. “That definitely sounds very fun — I can practice my Spanish.”.

Accompanying the Renaissance school students, who ranged in age from 10 to 14, were Head of School Leslie Hites and teachers Nathalie Hites and Emily Ahsoon, “The students benefited from the conference in so many ways,” Ahsoon said, “They arrived as Californians, and they left as the global citizens we need in this world, It was scarlet ruby ballet flats beautiful to see how their world view expanded and how they grew and matured, It’s impacted the classroom as well — students are listening in a different way and taking their research to a deeper level.”..

The conference wrapped up with a closing ceremony attended by all participants as well as many elected Chinese officials. Students presented and voted on resolutions they had made during their discussions and debates. “Eleni spoke in front of the whole audience,” Ahsoon said. “She really rose to the occasion and impressed many people — as did all our students.”. The students had more lighthearted activities too, including a cultural night when students from Chile made an impression on Collins.

“They read poetry by Pablo Neruda and did a cool Polynesian dance,” said Collins, who also liked the traditional fan dance performed by Chinese participants, Following the conference, the Renaissance students enjoyed a weeklong scarlet ruby ballet flats tour of such famous sites as the Shaolin Temple, where they saw a demonstration of kung fu, The students visited the Pagoda Forest; the Longmen Grottoes, which house hundreds of pieces of Buddhist art; Kaifeng, the birthplace of Chinese civilization; and many other historic sites..
