A team of band parents got in early to paint, in decorations, the local Moose Lodge like a story right out of New Orleans. They also set up the auction and ran the auction and then took everything down and brought everything back to start. Many TN band students also contributed their time to this event. They posted flyers in advance all over town, they sat on the planning committee, they designed the table decorations, they helped decorate the Moose Lodge on the day of “Mardi Gras,” and they set tables, bussed tables and helped clean up afterwards.

Tickets for the Mardi Gras Party were $45 for general admission and $30 for TN band alumni, Silent auction items included large pillows sandylion stickers, vintage, rare, prismatic, apples, worm, smiley, flowers, make up, ballet made from old TN uniforms, and front row tickets and preferred parking for the upcoming Class of 2015 Graduation, The Pacifica Quilters, who have made it their annual business to support the TN bands, donated a music-themed quilt for the soiree, In addition to allowing the Band Boosters to use their facility for the annual fundraiser, the Pacifica Moose Lodge donated $2,500 to the band, It takes a village and in this case, a dancing, dining bunch of big-hearted individuals who are willing to go all the way to Louisiana, figuratively, to help our kids make music..

You’ve got your good-looking rebel who’s gotta dance and authorities who don’t want any fancy footwork going on. All that appears to be missing is Kenny Loggins singing on the soundtrack. But from the beginning, this based-on-a-true-story production distances itself from the genre. “Dancer” is a serious and earnest drama more in line with the intentions, if not the execution, of 1984’s “White Nights” with Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines. A triumphant tale of the human spirit, “Dancer” is set against the political and cultural landscape of Iran’s hotly contested 2009 presidential election. It also sounds the trumpet for just how important and even revolutionary the fine arts can be.

The story centers on Iranian dancer Afshin Ghaffarian (Reece Ritchie), who with his college friends creates a renegade, underground dance company in Tehran, While it doesn’t qualify as a great film, it is a good one that’s entertaining and stirring — as any inspirational drama should be, But while you come away moved, even enlightened, you also have a nagging sense that the real story played out sandylion stickers, vintage, rare, prismatic, apples, worm, smiley, flowers, make up, ballet differently than Jon Croker’s screenplay, A quick Google search reveals that some cinematic liberties have been taken, including that galvanizing ending..

No matter. In his feature-length debut, director Richard Raymond has his heart in the right place and balances this mix of the politics and dance capably enough. The themes behind “Dancer” — how dance liberates and also conveys the tenor of the times — remain forever relevant and are presented with conviction and passion. Appropriately, the director hits the jackpot with an eloquently staged dance performance in the desert, put on by Ghaffarian and his friends and featuring the troubled and gorgeous Elaheh (Freida Pinto). The group of creative collegiate types performs this piece for about 20 people, and they do it away from the city to avoid arrest. It’s a heart-stopping sequence, choreographed by Akram Khan, who had a creative role in the 2012 Olympics in London, and danced with stunning elegance by Pinto of “Slumdog Millionaire” acclaim and relative newcomer Ritchie, who is a welcome new star-in-the-making. The boldly unique, mesmerizing and sensual piece of artistry took my breath away.

While “Desert sandylion stickers, vintage, rare, prismatic, apples, worm, smiley, flowers, make up, ballet Dancer” excels with its dances, it hits its marks solidly enough in the drama department, too, Ghaffarian’s love of dance is established from the start, as we watch a young boy in a country that doesn’t allow this art form to be celebrated all but devour clips of Rudolf Nureyev and, later, American dances on YouTube as he ventures into college, His relationship with the enigmatic Elaheh, a sensuous woman plagued by demons that include addiction, doesn’t follow the traditional arc of most dance films but does touch on the tortured nature of artists, which Pinto conveys with sensitivity, Elaheh and Afshin connect through dance, but their journeys follow different paths..
