Mildred is a fourth-generation Los Gatos resident who moved from the Sund family home to a San Jose board and care home last November. Today, Mildred’s daughter, Susan Ward, lives in the circa 1880 home on Foster Road. At one time, the Sunds owned 40 acres surrounding the old homestead, 13 of which were apricot, prune, almond and walnut orchards. A few fruit trees still dot the landscape, and in a month or two purple flowers will bloom from seeds that were brought to Los Gatos decades ago by Luisa Sund.

“We have some peonies that are at least 80 years old,” Ward said, The Sund farmhouse has views of the hills and retains its rural setting, even though new homes have been built nearby on Sund Avenue, “Civilization is closing in,” Ward says as she begins to tell the Sund family story, Mildred is sitting with us, her face turned up to the sun, “Mom’s not much of a talker,” Ward says, “but she loves the sun, She was a health advocate all her life and played tennis into ballet slippers, pink dancing shoes, up on your toes, classic ballerina instant digital download counted cross stitch pattern her 90s.”..

The Sund’s are apparently a resilient group: Mildred’s mother turned 100 years old in 1984. Her father lived to be 90. The first member of Mildred’s family who came to Los Gatos arrived after the Civil War, along with more than two dozen soldiers from the Illinois Infantry. “There’s a row of these guys’ tombstones at Los Gatos Memorial Park,” Ward said, pointing to a photo of her ancestor’s grave. The Civil War veterans had families, and as years passed, their descendants began to assume the reins of leadership in Los Gatos. They were people like Mildred’s grandfather, Herman Sund, who was one of the town’s founding trustees and served in the mid-1890s.

“They were trying to make the town a town,” Ward said, “Herman owned a lumber yard and built a lot of the town’s infrastructure, He also built the Lyndon Hotel twice because it burned down.”, The landmark Lyndon Hotel at the corner of Main Street and N, Santa Cruz Avenue was built in 1899 and torn down in 1963, Blow-ups of old photos of the Lyndon hang today on the walls of Main Street Burgers, a tribute ballet slippers, pink dancing shoes, up on your toes, classic ballerina instant digital download counted cross stitch pattern to the once-bustling hotel that was an original Los Gatos hot spot..
