SafeRides operates out of the Cafe Hope at Los Gatos United Methodist Church. There is always one adult on duty and between six and nine teens working as telephone dispatchers, drivers and navigators. “Most volunteers here have had experience with drunk drivers,” LGHS senior Mats Menhardt said. Mats is on the SafeRides board of directors. “A lot of kids calling for a ride have been drinking or smoking–maybe 60 percent of the time. But we’ve gotten calls from kids who just aren’t feeling safe and need a ride home,” he said.
