However, being good, and legit, isn’t exactly paying off, so what’s the use? That ethical tug-of-war is at the heart of the series.

It’s a hoot to see his character slip into “showtime” mode, spout random lines from movies and try to tap-dance his way out of trouble — even when he has to do it, at one point, in the middle of the desert. You just want to root for him. What are not quite so fun are the stretches of sluggish pacing, which occasionally suck some of the air out of the story. It’s also problematic that, so far, none of the new faces we’re introduced to truly pops off the screen. But maybe “Better Call Saul,” like its title character, will continue to evolve.
